Mood board

Thursday 26 July 2007 by galina

This morning I put together my first 'mood board' for a Marketing meeting at the studio I work for.

A mood board is a large board covered in images and used as a form of visual stimulation. It's used to represent the 'feel' of intended advertising, or to explore a number of alternatives. This is a good way of researching ideas for advertisements that are not yet made.

Every 6 months we change the theme that our studio uses for it's advertising campaigns. At the moment the theme is "No one knows Out-of-Home like EYE do" and very much typography focused. We are about to launch the next theme, so today we pitched to the broader marketing team our creative concepts (for the next 3 themes) with the assistance of a mood board.

Basically, the designers at EYE pulled together some visuals as starting concepts for these themes and chucked them together on one board. Unfortunately I have to blur the text because of our competitors. A lot of work has gone into developing these new slogans therefore I can not reveal what they are, which in tern doesn't make much sense to you as to why those images were chosen.

(insert pic of work space at studio and at home)

I really like this mood board concept. I guess it's what we've always done subconsciously at Fine Arts in our studio spaces, just pinning up images and design that we like or don't like. And today I was able to chuck one together with some print outs, foam board and double-sided tape for a design concepts pitch. Good exercise.

There's a flickr page dedicated to mood boards that's pretty cool

Urban Typography

I came across this really cool site: thought bucket
And a little more info on type in the sky

this is what interested me the most on the site:urban typography:
Such a simple concept "looking up" but a great outcome (thanks to Photoshop I'm sure)

Posters x2

Monday 2 July 2007 by galina

These posters are a photo essay. They document an experience, through a visual narrative.

The first one is about noticing thing that you wouldn't usually notice. I'm trying to 'notice' them along my daily journey down Enmore Road. The detail, type and signage tell a story. It shows the raw marks, as well as the 'thought out' design/brands/signage.

This second poster takes a step back. It's the same journey, but here, it's about the environment and people. It shows the realm of human interaction, social context and public space.

about

October 2006: I moved to Sydney from Christchurch, NZ. February 2007: I started working at EYE, an outdoor media advertising company. I work in the Marketing department, as a Graphic Designer (one of 4 in-house designers) producing and co-ordinating work that promotes EYE as a multi-format, single branded, out-of-home entity world wide. February 2004-currently I am a full time student at Canterbury University. This year I am undertaking a research assignment for DESI401 (my fourth year of a B.FA Degree in Graphic Design) and this blog is here as a means of communication with my lecturer Luke Wood and other design students.
